Our client had a dream to provide high quality, nurturing day care service to working families in her neighborhood. She found a space in the lower level of a church building and hired Childress & Cunningham to study the feasibility and ultimately the design of a day care facility. Building code compliance issues were challenging, involving fire separation between mixed uses and emergency egress. Day care licensure requirements were more than satisfied, with the inclusion of an indoor “large muscle play” area. The design solution provides an implied “open classroom layout,” in which rooms are separated by partial-height walls and moveable storage cubbie cabinets. Classrooms are inter-connected to allow the flexibility to combine classes and activities.
